Amy Stein

statement / bio

I’m drawn to the power of connection found in the commonplace and familiar.  My work is about attachment to place and time, marking the light and shape of a location by the time of day and the season.  In painting, pigment, water, brush and paper are manipulated by hand to make an image from an idea or observation or perspective.  It’s an interactive, compelling, and (mostly) satisfying process.

Painting and drawing since childhood, I pursued painting at Alfred University, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and Vermont Studio School.  In addition, I studied with individual artists including: Seymour Simmons, Tom Ouellette and Gary Tucker.  Originally an oil painter, I now work exclusively in watercolor.
