“Don 34, by Marcia Hnatowitch, is a mesmerizing portrait executed in deft strokes overlaid with a patterned patina of pale green. To the subject’s right is his three-quarter reflection in sepia tones. Both exhibit a pensive, yet bemused, and intense gaze at the viewer. Throughout the piece, the mark making with paint and with watercolor pencil is precise yet enigmatic, lending a sense of a ghostly presence. It is as if the subject is looking at us from behind a barrier but is fully in attendance. It is a very powerful portrait.”
