DESCRIPTION:While a bit off the beaten track for a watercolor society program\, we thought that some of our members might be interested in a presentation on creating children’s books. Fortunately\, we have just the person to lead this session. NWS Board Member Stuart Murphy is the author of a total of 80 children’s books\, all of which are currently in print. This 90-minute program will focus on several topics related to the development of children’s books. These will include: The process of creating a children’s book\, developing a series\, and getting published. DESCRIPTION:Five Online classes on Thursday Evenings from 7:00-8:00pm\n\nNovember 2\, 9\, 16\, 30\, and December 7. (No class on Thanksgiving.)\n\nTo apply for the workshop\, click HERE.\n\n                             \n\nThe figure drawing course will focus on the fundamental principles of figure drawing and painting\, providing students with useful techniques for live drawing sessions.\n\nParticipants will review both traditional academic methods for rendering the human figure and more freeform\, expressive approaches to drawing.\n\nThey will also explore techniques for depicting three-dimensionality using both a single tone and a full spectrum of colors.\n\nFurther emphasis will be placed on capturing the entire figure in various poses as well as sketching individual body parts\, while also allocating time to the art of portrait painting.\n\nParticipants will b provided with information on resources and materials for farther study and growth as well as support and guidance for the own artwork. SUMMARY:Painting in Series with Chetana Keltcher (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:This exciting course by NWS Board Member\, Chetana Keltcher\, will run online over 10 Wednesday evenings from February till June 2023. Participants will paint the same subject for the duration of the workshop and will tackle different challenges each week. People will be encouraged out of their comfort zone into making a personal statement with their work. Classes will combine lectures on design\, friendly online critiques\, and exploration of new materials and methods of working. This class ran January – May 2021 and again from October 20221 – May 2022 and was wildly successful for the participants. Several students won prizes with their artwork in NWS and other watercolor shows. It is back by popular demand with a few changes – critiques will be online and we will do exercises (on design\, color\, techniques\, etc) or paint after the lecture. \nFebruary 15\, 2023 to June 17\, 2023 (Wednesdays 7:30pm – 9pm\, final presentation on Saturday June 17 at 11am) \nCost is $100 per person. Tony is an exceptional artist and teacher and he judged all the paintings that were submitted. I don’t envy him as he had the difficult task to choose only three paintings out of 63 submitted by a very talented group of artists. We will be celebrating our winners at the reception. \nHowever\, to be recognized by one’s peers is a special honor. We are asking you to select 4 artists for honorable mentions. DESCRIPTION:New In-Person Workshop with luminary watercolor artist Tony Couch! \nAs this workshop was cancelled in March 2020 due to the Pandemic we are happy to announce that Tony is coming next May to Newton! Previously signed-up members have had the first chance to sign up again and now the sign-up for all of our NWS members is open. The location for the workshop is Newton and it will be a 3-day workshop\, May 5 – 7\, Thursday through Saturday\, 9:30am – 4:30pm. Please sign up HERE. \n \nThis will be an information packed workshop\, with Tony doing a full sheet demonstration painting each morning\, plenty of time for you to paint in the afternoon\, and a critique at the end of each day of all the work done that day.  He’ll unravel much of the “mystery” about design while he shows you how to make your paintings fresh and crisp – and he’ll make color much simpler for you\, too.  Many students have said they’ve learned more in one day at one of these workshops than in four years of art school! \n\nNo video cameras at the workshop\, please – but still cameras are OK.  \n\nEach workshop participant accepts full and complete responsibility for any risk associated with attendance and participation in this workshop and holds harmless the location provider and the Newton Watercolor Society from all liability\, claims\, losses\, and/or damages\n\n$425 for the members and $475 for non-members.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:“Quick Sketch Watercolor Portraits” by Pam Wenger \nThree-Half-Day online Workshop \nMonday-Wednesday February 14\, 15\, 16\, 2022\, 9am-12:30pm \n  \nLearn to paint portraits in watercolor in a spontaneous style that involves minimal layering and the use of transparent colors. In this three-half-day online workshop (M\, Tu\, W\, 9-12:30\, Feb. 14\, 15\, 16)\, we will focus on loosening up the portrait painting process and working to achieve a more relaxed look that highlights the beauty and freshness of the watercolor medium. Pam Wenger is an experienced artist and teacher and you can check out her work here. \n  \nShe will send a hard copy packet to each individual: reference photos\, four watercolor paper with lightly printed reference on it already. (No need to draw beforehand\, get right to painting.) She sends a sheet with small dabs of the 12 transparent colors she likes. Including colors like peacock blue\, hookers’ green\, Holbein burnt sienna. She provides tech tools and tips. \n  \nThe workshop is online via Zoom. She makes a recording of each day’s workshop\, and every night the recording is available. Includes demos which separated out. These recordings are available forever\, they are private. Students should be comfortable with painting in watercolor\, but do not need to have experience with portrait painting. \nWe will be using the Zoom platform\, so you will need a computer or tablet (larger than a cell phone) and some comfort level with using Zoom. She will send out a link to the class via email. \nThe workshop fee is $195 for all participants. \nPlease sign up HERE.

DESCRIPTION:After a one year break\, we are happy to be able to again offer in person Figure Painting with great models! The location is the New Art Center (61 Washington Park\, Newtonville) in the big Elvas room as in previous years. Parking is plentiful; restrooms are in the basement. The room offers tables\, easels and chairs; bring your own watercolor materials. Ritu and Donna will lead us through the sessions\, starting with quick\, short poses to warm up to several longer 15-20 minutes poses. In the breaks we will offer refreshments and coffee. \nNo sign-up necessary\, just drop in. Members only. \nModel fee for each session: $10 \n

However\, due to high COVID incidence\, we have switched to Zoom\, at least for the first session on Jan 15. \nNo sign-up necessary. Members only. SUMMARY:Plein Air @ Home with Linda Rinearson - Painting Yorkshire
DESCRIPTION:Come join us on Saturday December 11th when NWS member Linda Rinearson will talk about painting in Yorkshire\, England from her second home in Harrogate\, UK. Linda spends about six months of the year in the UK\, mostly in Yorkshire\, which is her favorite location to paint. As it turns out David Hockney was born and raised in Yorkshire so we’ll also look at some of his watercolors from his book “A Yorkshire Sketchbook“. \nLinda will present a couple pieces that she created in Yorkshire. She’ll talk about the history and nature of the location\, any challenges\, and why she selected these places to paint. She’ll also show the different techniques she uses as she paints the classic Yorkshire Landscape. \nThen Linda will share some of her photos of Yorkshire. You can use these  photos as possible subjects and paint the Yorkshire scenes or go outside wherever you are and do a local plein air painting. Then we will all get together at 4:00 EST to discuss our paintings. \nA link to Linda’s photos was sent in the email announcement.

SUMMARY:Online Workshop: The Power of a Limited Palette with Brienne M Brown
DESCRIPTION:This is a 3 day workshop\, Monday\, Wednesday and Friday\, 3 hours per day\, November 15 + 17 + 19\, 2021\,  3:00pm – 6:00pm \nThe way to learn color confidence\, build a personalized palette\, and use the full power of color is to start simple and build as you gain experience. Painting with a limited palette is a great way to do this.  During this 3-Day Online Workshop\, Brienne will teach you the power of a limited palette\, explain some important color theory concepts\, and give you tips on color mixing with watercolor.  The workshop will be from 3:00 – 6:00 pm (Eastern Standard Time) on each day.  Brienne will give instruction and demonstrations about using a limited palette of colors.  She will then assign independent work for you to turn-in after the first and second workshop days.  Brienne will conduct group critiques online for feedback and then end the workshop with more demonstrations and answer any questions students have. \nThis course is meant for the serious beginner to intermediate artist.  Participants should have a good grasp on how to use watercolor\, basic drawing skills\, and a good understanding of values.  The focus of this course is understanding color and how to use it to your advantage as a watercolor artist. \nAll LIVE Zoom Sessions will be recorded and up for you to review by the end of each meeting day.  This will give you time to review anything you might have missed for whatever reason.  Also\, you will get access to watch these videos for 30-days after the end of the workshop. \n$220 for the members and $270 for non-members. SUMMARY:Creative Journey by Painting in Series with Chetana Keltcher
DESCRIPTION:This exciting course by NWS Board Member\, Chetana Keltcher\, will run online over 10 Sunday mornings from the end of October until the end of March 2022. Participants will paint the same subject for the duration of the workshop and will tackle different challenges each week. People will be encouraged out of their comfort zone into making a personal statement with their work. Classes will combine lectures on design\, friendly critiques\, and exploration of new materials and methods of working. This class ran January – May 2021 and was wildly successful for the participants – several students won prizes with their artwork in NWS and other watercolor shows. Based on class feedback\, critiques will be done slightly differently this time. \nOctober 31\, 2021 to March 20\, 2022\, Sundays 9:30am – 11:00am \nCost is $100 per person and is limited to 20-25 participants.
