DESCRIPTION:The 10th Annual Newton Watercolor Society Member’s Show\n\nwill be held in the\n\nMain Floor Gallery at Newton City Hall\n     \nMarch 2\, through April 30\, 2026\n\nDEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: FEBRUARY 15TH\n\n \n\nMany of you already submitted a painting during our original Call for Art last November.  With the show being at City Hall\, we now have space for more artwork.  Please consider submitting a second work of art.  Each member is invited to submit up to two paintings. Tony is an exceptional artist and teacher and he judged all the paintings that were submitted. I don’t envy him as he had the difficult task to choose only three paintings out of 63 submitted by a very talented group of artists. We will be celebrating our winners at the reception. \nHowever\, to be recognized by one’s peers is a special honor. We are asking you to select 4 artists for honorable mentions. SUMMARY:Register for the 1st NWS Abstract and Experimental Watercolor Show
DESCRIPTION:Abstract art uses the same basic tools as traditional art – shape\, color\, and value to paint a composition which is not strictly representational or realistic. The departure from accurate representation can be partial or complete. Artwork which takes liberties by altering color or shape in conspicuous ways can be said to be partially abstract or an abstraction. Total abstraction bears no trace of the recognizable. The artist’s imagination plays a bigger role in these non-representational paintings. Abstract art can be interpreted by different viewers in different ways and thus involves the viewer more directly as a participant. \nDeadline: May 1st\, 2021\nArtists will be notified by May 15\, 2021 There will be an online reception via Zoom in June \nJudge: James Varnum https://www.jcvarnumart.com  James C Varnum\, exhibitions chair of the Newton Art Association\, is an experimental painter working in watercolor\, alcohol inks\, and liquid graphite. He holds a B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute as well as an M.Ed. from the University of NH and an M.S. in Communication Disorders from Emerson College. DESCRIPTION:Karen Keough is an award winning painter\, specializing in watercolors\, for over 40 years. Currently\, she paints and runs her own art licensing business in Ipswich\, MA.  ​Her introduction to watercolors came when her Mother brought her to Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester\, during a snowstorm to paint on the beach!  They dropped paint onto their paper and let the falling snowflakes design their paintings! This is when Karen learned to trust that the painting will tell you what it wants to be! Karen paints very loosely and enjoys the process as it develops! \nHer inspirations comes from the ocean and florals. She has studied with many teachers in Rockport\, Gloucester\, Lynnfield\, and Naples\, Florida. She has won numerous awards for her seascapes and boats. She teaches a watercolor course every fall at the Vocational School in Wakefield\, Massachusetts.
