Here is some background info of Nancy and James:
Nancy DuVergne Smith, co-president of the Newton Art Association, is a long-time member of the Newton Watercolor Society. She holds a BFA in painting from Tulane University and a master’s in English and American Literature from Harvard’s Extension School. After drawing and painting in oil, acrylic, gouache, she now works exclusively in watercolor. “I love the magic of water and color embracing, expanding, and resolving. This timeless journey visits figures, flora, and waterscapes,” she says. “A wet brush means a good day.”
Vames C Varnum, exhibitions chair of the Newton Art Association, is an experimental painter working in watercolor, alcohol inks, and liquid graphite. He holds a B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute as well as an M.Ed. from the University of New Hampshire and an M.S. in Communication Disorders from Emerson College. He is an active artist in Newton, MA. with memberships in several art associations and galleries. “My paintings are combinations of layered colors, movements, and various textures on traditional watercolor papers and on substrates such as Yupo and Terra-Skin,” he says.
